ABOUT MOBILES

The Mobile Connection:

The Cell Phone's Impact on Society (08 Sep 2004)Ling next devotes a chapter each to the obvious appeal of mobile phones for security and safety uses and to the social effects of the temporal coordination of our affairs that the devices make possible. The former topic is fairly intuitive and is probably the reason many of us gave mobile phones to our children and parents, although he makes clear that such intended uses do not necessarily comprise the dominant uses the phones wind up serving for their recipients. The latter topic contains an interesting if barely relevant discussion of the history of timekeeping but goes on to address one of his major interests: that the social effect of "microcoordination" is more complex and interactive than seems evident at first glance. The point is clear enough once raised. Without question, we can better coordinate the details of our social interactions, our comings and goings, our finding each other, if we can talk quickly to each other from no matter where. Less obvious is the fact that having such an unprecedented ability exerts an impact on the forms of our social interaction themselves, not only the ways we make and keep our appointments but the sort of appointments we make and other details of our daily lives.

Aims and Scope

Recent advances in wireless technology have led to mobile computing, a new dimension in data communication and processing. Many predict a new emerging, gigantic market with millions of mobile users carrying small, battery-powered terminals equipped with wireless connection, and as a result, the way people use information resources is predicted to be radically transformed. The International Journal of Mobile Information Systems (IJMIS) presents visionary concepts and stimulating ideas in mobile information systems at both the theory and application levels. The objectives of the journal are to be a source for mobile information systems research and development, and to serve as an outlet for facilitating communication and networking among mobile information systems researchers, practitioners, and professionals across academics, government, industry and students. The journal is published multiple times a year, with the purpose of providing a forum for state-of-the-art development and research, as well as current innovative activities in mobile information systems. The main goal will be to provide timely dissemination of information.

BANK FINANCE

Bank finance
Different types of bank finance
Is bank finance an option for you?
Where can I get more information?

Bank finance
Cash is the lifeblood of any business and most businesses need some financial help to get started, grow and develop. Finance for business comes in three different forms – equity, grants and bank finance. Before approaching the bank, first investigate the other forms of finance – grants and financial supports – available to you. Once you have organised either a grant and/or equity, you are more likely to be successful with any application to your bank.
As with securing funding from other sources, getting bank finance is essentially a selling exercise – you need to sell the concept of your business idea to the bank. Banks will assess the levels of risk of your proposal and need to satisfy themselves that the potential rewards match the risk – ultimately, does your proposed business venture have the capacity to repay the debt.

BRIGHT FUTURE

It seems like everywhere you turn these days, there is more bad news about the global economy. Bankruptcies, layoffs, and bailouts continue to mount. We are hearing the words "recession" and "depression" more frequently than ever before in our lifetimes. The truth is, the world is in the midst of a severe economic crisis, and the end isn't yet in sight. But if you do software, web development, or media, you have good reason to be hopeful about the future. This is the time to hunker down and continue growing your skills and experience, because what you do will be more important than ever.
Unlike some of the other industries hard-hit by the crisis, we've already been through this before. The information technology sector alone lost 700,000 jobs when the Internet bubble burst in 2000. These were permanent job losses, never to be recovered, and even the most pessimistic estimates predict only a fraction of the losses this time around. Our industry is paranoid by nature, and we've watched a number of failed business models go by the wayside since 2000, while new models have emerged. There will still be some painful lessons to learn before the worst is over, but our industry as a whole is much stronger than we were 8 years ago.
The real reason for hope, however, is the nature of software itself. Software is one of the most scalable forms of human value creation ever achieved. When you write a piece of software, your skill and effort can benefit thousands, millions, or hundreds of millions of people with almost no incremental cost to you. Web developers understand this intuitively. Facebook expends almost zero incremental effort to propagate new features to 100 million users. The same holds true of traditional skrinkwrap companies. Adobe Software, who spend heavily on research and development, still enjoy 80% profit margins when expenses are accounted for. Microsoft, Google, and Apple enjoy similarly high margins, and it's not because we are geniuses -- it is because software is such a superbly scalable way to provide value.
This wasn't always a matter of common agreement. There was a serious debate in the 1990s about the value of software. Some companies felt that software was simply free "bait" that could be used to sell hardware. Those companies are now defunct. And most importantly, companies like Google and Apple (and of course, Microsoft) who focused on software, have done well. This isn't to say that hardware is defunct -- back in 2004, Steve Jobs famously explained that the iPod is simply "software in a box". The complete experience requires you to purchase the proprietary hardware and pairs you with the iTunes software service, but these are essentially mechanisms to prevent piracy. The real competitive advantage is in the software. The mobile handset companies who have done very well, all realize that their hardware is a mechanism used to sell their software experiences, and not vice-versa. Likewise, Google's crown jewel, the pagerank software, is kept secret from most Google employees and is hidden behind a service, yet can benefit millions of users by being made available over the web.
You already know that creating software is hard. Skilled user experience professionals, developers, and testers don't grow on trees. Traditional software (whether in a file, in a box, or in a cloud) will be more important than ever, and the massive changes taking place in the world economy will present some new opportunities for skilled people to contribute to the common good. Software will be needed to help fill the holes left by the decline of mainstream news organizations. Software will be needed as spending on energy independence increases drastically. Software to make healthcare more efficient, software to help citizens connect more effectively with government and social programs, software to educate, inform, and inspire. Yes, software will be more important than ever. There may be lean times ahead for all of us, but there is no better time to start getting better at what you do.
So, what are the trends in software that get you excited about the future? Where do you think the biggest challenges and opportunities lie? We'd love to hear from you. And don't forget to subscribe to the RSS feed or follow mixonline on Twitter to get future updates

Banks, housing batter stocks
Stocks tumbled Monday as investors were hit with a gloomy outlook for banks and bleak news about housing. Goldman Sachs' downgrade of large banks, and its estimate that Citigroup would have to write down $15 billion due to its exposure to risky debt over the next two quarters, unnerved Wall Street.

FINANCE ACCOUNTING

Financial accountancy (or financial accounting) is the field of accountancy concerned with the preparation of financial statements for decision makers, such as stockholders, suppliers, banks, employees, government agencies, owners, and other stakeholders. The fundamental need for financial accounting is to reduce principal-agent problem by measuring and monitoring agents' performance and reporting the results to interested users.
Financial accountancy is used to prepare accounting information for people outside the organization or not involved in the day to day running of the company. Managerial accounting provides accounting information to help managers make decisions to manage the business.
In short, Financial Accounting is the process of summarizing financial data taken from an organization's accounting records and publishing in the form of annual (or more frequent) reports for the benefit of people outside the organization.
Financial accountancy is governed by both local and international accounting standards.

Basic accounting concepts
Financial accountants produce financial statements based on Generally Accepted Accounting Principles of a respective country.
Financial accounting serves following purposes:
producing general purpose financial statements
provision of information used by management of a business entity for decision making, planning and performance evaluation
for meeting regulatory requirements

HUMAN RIGHTS

The United Nations (UN) has created a global structure for protecting human rights, based largely on its Charter, non-binding declarations, legally binding treaties and on various activities aimed at advancing democracy and human rights throughout the world.
The UN often finds it necessary to define rights in a cautious manner, as it is host to an extremely diverse group of member states, with varying economic, social, cultural and political histories. Subsequently, the UN must accommodate these differences in its mechanisms for protecting the human rights it has outlined in treaties and declarations. Thus, these methods may be less substantive or lack in strict enforcement as compared to those of regional institutions. Broad agreements allow the UN to accommodate a spectrum of different viewpoints. The UN thus affects more nations and many more individuals than any regional institution could.
The UN's system of human rights protection has three main components: first, it establishes international standards through its Charter, legally binding treaties, non-binding declarations, agreements, and documents; next, it mandates Special Rapporteurs and experts, and groups, such as working groups, committees and treaty bodies, to work in various manners for the promotion and protection of human rights; finally, it offers technical assistance through the Voluntary Fund for Advisory Services and Technical Assistance in the field of Human Rights.

VIRUSES

The essential elements of the infective cycle of DNA bacteriophages consist of:
The virions attach to the surface of their host cell (a).
The proteins of the capsid inject the DNA core into the cell (b).
Once within the cell, some of the bacteriophage genes (the "early" genes) are transcribed (by the host's RNA polymerase) and translated (by the host's ribosomes, tRNA, etc.) to produce enzymes that will make many copies of the phage DNA and will turn off (even destroy) the host's DNA.
As fresh copies of phage DNA accumulate, other genes (the "late" genes) are transcribed and translated to form the proteins of the capsid (c).
The stockpile of DNA cores and capsid proteins are assembled into complete virions (d).
Another "late" gene is transcribed and translated into molecules of lysozyme. The lysozyme attacks the peptidoglycan wall (from the inside, of course).
Link to illustrated description of the action of lysozyme on the bacterial cell wall.
Eventually the cell ruptures and releases its content of virions ready to spread the infection to new host cells (e).
Hepatitis BThe genome of hepatitis B ("serum hepatitis") is also dsDNA, but its mode of replication is different from the other dsDNA viruses.
Once inside its host cell (a liver cell), the virion core enters the nucleus.
The viral DNA is transcribed (by the host's RNAP II) into molecules of mRNA.
These enter the cytoplasm where they are translated (again by host ribosomes, etc.) into the various proteins of the virus, including a viral reverse transcriptase.
These components are assembled into new viral cores, and in each
one molecule of mRNA is reverse transcribed into a single strand of DNA, which then serves as the template for the synthesis of the second strand.
2. Genome is single-stranded DNAExamples:
phiX-174, another famous bacteriophage (infects E. coli) that helped usher in the modern era of molecular genetics. Its single strand of DNA has 5,386 nucleotides and encodes 10 genes.
Link to a diagram (100 K) showing its life cycle.
Adeno-associated virus (AAV). This virus, which can only grow in cells infected with adenovirus, shows great promise as a safe and effective vector for introducing therapeutic genes into human patients.
Discussion
RNA Viruses
1. Negative-stranded RNA viruses: genome consists of one or more molecules of single-stranded "antisense" RNAExamples:
measles
mumps
respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza viruses (PIV), and human metapneumovirus. (In the U.S., these close relatives account for hundreds of thousands of hospital visits each year, mostly by children.)
rabies
Ebola
influenza
Link to a page devoted to influenza viruses.
Method of replication
In addition to its antisense RNA genome, the core of the virion contains an RNA replicase, which is an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase.
Once released in the host cell, this polymerase makes many complementary copies of the genome, which are "sense" and serve as messenger RNAs.
These are translated into the proteins needed to assemble fresh virions, e.g., capsid proteins and RNA polymerase. Note that this strategy
provides many copies of mRNA
depends on the virion having its own RNA replicase (because the host cell does not) (So, naked RNA molecules of these viruses are not infectious - in contrast to the next group: the positive-stranded RNA viruses)
2. Positive-stranded RNA: genome is a molecule of single-stranded "sense" RNAExamples:
polioviruses
rhinoviruses (frequent cause of the common "cold"; 99 different strains are known)
noroviruses (frequent cause of outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness — especially in "closed" settings like cruise ships and nursing homes)
coronaviruses (includes the agent of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)
rubella (causes "German" measles)
yellow fever virus
West Nile virus
dengue fever viruses
equine encephalitis viruses
hepatitis A ("infectious hepatitis") and hepatitis C viruses
tobacco mosaic virus (TMV)
Method of replication
The "sense" RNA encodes an RNA replicase (an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase) that
is translated by the host machinery (ribosomes, etc.) into the enzyme, which
catalyzes the synthesis of large numbers of "antisense" replicative intermediates.
These serve as templates for the synthesis of large numbers of mRNA molecules that
are translated by the host cell machinery into the proteins needed to make fresh virions
are incorporated into the new virions.
3. Genome consists of several molecules of double-stranded RNAExamples:
reovirus
several plant viruses
Method of replication
The virus particle contains enzymatic machinery that transcribes each of the dsRNA molecules into a mRNA (complete with cap) and exports these into the cytosol of the infected cell.
4. RetrovirusesThese viruses contain a reverse transcriptase that copies their RNA genome into DNA.
Link to an illustrated discussion of the life cycle of retroviruses.Examples:
The Rous sarcoma virus (RSV)
HIV-1 and HIV-2, that cause AIDS
HTLV-1 and HTLV-2; about 3% of the people infected with HTLV-1 develop leukemia.

ENGLISH IMPORTANT

  1. Do you want to:
earn good grades while you are in the United States?
be able to speak comfortably with your teachers, fellow students, and neighbors?
have a good relationship with your academic adviser?
obtain a graduate teaching assistantship or other form of financial aid?
be able to carry out normal administrative procedures without stress?
be able shop, talk on a telephone, and use the public transportation system without difficulty?
get an internship in your field of study
    make presentations at professional meetings?
make a positive impression on prospective employers?
make friends with people who are not Chinese?

All of these worthy goals require using English. Everything will be easier for you, and you will be able to accomplish more of what you want to accomplish, if you speak English well. Much of your success in the U.S. will depend on your ability to communicate with people in English. There will be times when you need to know how to use a machine, obtain information on getting a job, or convince another person of your ideas. To accomplish these goals you will need English. Students constantly share ideas and information in informal conversations. If you miss out on these conversations, your chances for professional and personal success will be limited compared to your peers.

TRAVEL

TRAVEL

Travel is the change in location of people on a trip through the means of transport from one location to another. Travel is most commonly for recreation (as part of tourism or to visit friends and family), for business or for commuting; but may be for numerous other reasons, such as migration, fleeing war, etc. Travel may occur by walking or human-powered mode, or through mechanical vehicles, either as private or public transport.[citation needed]
Travel may be local, regional, national or international. In some countries, non-local internal travel may require an internal passport, while international travel typically requires a passport and visa.
The word originates from the Middle English word travailen ("to toil"), which comes from the Anglo-French word travailler ("travail")[1]. A person who travels is called a traveler (US)

RESEARCH AIDS

HIV/AIDS reaches into every corner of society, affecting parents, children and youth, teachers and health workers, rich and poor. It is the leading cause of adult death on the African continent. The percentage of adults infected with HIV ranges from 3 or 4 percent in West African countries to as high as 30 percent in regions of southern Africa. The research program focuses on treatment, transmission and prevention, and socioeconomic impacts of HIV/AIDS

important new report, "HIV and AIDS in South Asia" analyses the extent to which HIV and AIDS pose risks to economic development in the South Asia region. Although HIV prevalence in South Asia is comparatively low, the region faces challenges including the risk of escalation of concentrated epidemics, the heavy economic welfare costs for affected households, and the fiscal burden of scaling up treatment for AIDS.
Part 1 reviews the dynamics of the epidemic, and a chapter on targeted prevention in Afghanistan discusses cost benefits. Part 2 looks at the economic impact of the epidemic and the welfare costs. Part 3 looks at the actual costs of treatment in India and the fiscal implications of scaling up life-long treatment for AIDS in the countries of the region

CRIMINAL LAW

What is Criminal Law?Criminal law is the area of law that deals with those who commit crimes. Crimes are generally defined as deviant behavior that violates social norms. What is considered a social norm and what is considered deviant behavior is determined both at the federal level and the state level, as are the punishments for various crimes. Punishments for crimes vary based on the severity of the crime that was committed and where the crime was committed. In the United States, crimes are classified in two main categories: felonies and misdemeanors. Felonies are serious crimes that are generally punishable by a year or more in prison (e.g., armed robbery, murder). Misdemeanors are less serious crimes that are generally punishable by less than a year in prison (e.g., petty theft, vandalism).People accused of crimes are granted certain rights under the US Constitution that protect them from being treated unfairly. Some of these rights include:
The right to an attorney
The right to not incriminate oneself
The right to a speedy and public trial
The right to an appeal Consequences for those convicted of a crime can change a person’s life forever—affecting career choices, educational opportunities and personal liberties. For this reason, it is a good idea to have a skilled criminal defense lawyer on your side if you have been accused of committing a crime. A criminal defense attorney can not only help you understand your rights, but make sure those rights are protected. In addition to protecting your rights, a skilled attorney should also be able to help you develop a strong defense for the charges you face. Contacting an attorney as soon as you are arrested or suspect you may be arrested is imperative. Having a criminal defense lawyer by your side may help you avoid mistakes that could negatively impact your case. Additionally, having an attorney on-hand early will allow sufficient time to strategize your defense and thoroughly investigate the charges you may face.Remember, a criminal record may follow you around for the rest of your life. Don’t leave your future up to fate. Contact a criminal defense attorney today
